Loving Even When It Hurts

“I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.”

Mother Teresa

Questions:  1. Have you ever felt joy when you made a painful decision to love?

2. What are our limits in love?

3. Will you stop loving when it hurts?

  1. Bob,
I think it is amazing that God has given us prayer as the most powerful tool, yet not everyone uses His gift. I commend you on your attitude in terms of praying before difficult situations. You are right in that it is not about us, but rather how God can use us.

  2. I feel continually challenged by the necessity for prayerfully entering into situations with those who stand in opposition to me. Praying for my enemies allows me to actually see that in God’s eyes they are not my enemies, just people who God loves as much as He loves me. Too often I am imagining opposition rather than trying to find the way to befriend and support them. It doesn’t actually hurt to love these people if I accept a more transcendent view of who God calls me to be. The Lord continues to surprise me when I take the time to turn to him in prayer before I walk into a difficult situation.

The limits in love have more to do with the boundaries and privacies that people require. Loving and helping people has to come from a place of humility and respect, not from anything resembling superiority or condescension. We need to go cautiously and prayerfully into the complicated situations.

I remember a therapist who said once, “He who deserves it least needs the most love.”
